Shetland Pony
| Origins: | Shetland Islands, Scotland. One of the oldest surviving breeds. Originally used for all farm tasks and in the mines as pit ponies. |
| Breed Characteristics: | A very hardy pony that is extremely strong in relation to its size. Sure-footed, with excellent eyesight and are long lived. Small attractive head, with eyes set wide apart. Small, alert ears. Short, muscular neck. Short back. Legs are strong and short. Copious main and tail growth and thick, waterproof winter coats. |
| Temperament: | Steady temperament but if spoilt can be difficult. |
| Colours: | Mostly black, chestnut, brown, grey, pinto |
| Size: | Up to 42 ins (10.2 hh) |
| Uses: | Ideal for a child's first pony or simply a pet. |
